Harold Camping is at it again. Only a few days after his rapture prediction failed to come to light on May 21st, 2011, the California AM radio announcer has developed a new prediction, claiming that he was five months off. The date of the new rapture? October 21st, 2011. The news of Camping's new fake prediction comes on the heels of reports of attempted suicides and deaths related to the faux-rapture, deaths which Camping is directly responsible for, but as of today, it doesn't look like he's being pursued by law enforcement.
Camping's failed May 21st rapture prediction wasn't his first. He also predicted that the rapture was destined to happen on September 6th, 1994, in a book he published in 1992, where he claimed that 1988 was the jumping-off point for a future rapture. In that book, he claimed that 2011 would be the last year Earth would exist. As of May 24th, 2011, the third planet from the sun is still here.
Amidst all of these predictions, Harold Camping has been profiting quite resoundingly. The 2009 IRS filings from Family Radio, his radio network, indicated that it had over $104 million in assets. And those profits aren't all going toward Christian causes, like helping the needy or setting up missions. Around $34 million of those assets are tied up in investments. Harold Camping and Family Radio are profiting from these phony predictions, making money through their efforts to drum up fear.
Before you start thinking that Harold Camping is nothing more than an entertainer, where his followers are paying for the suspense and thrills of living in the end of days, you should know that people have literally died as a direct result of Camping's predictions. A Christian man in Kenya was found dead in a church on the day of the false rapture. Meanwhile, a woman attempted to murder her two young children and her self, putting a box cutter to their throats and their wrists, as well as her own. If it weren't for an unannounced visit from a friend, all three of them would be dead, all because the mother believed the rapture was about to happen.
Is Camping being pursued by law enforcement? As of today, the answer is no. Cases of suicide and murder are being chalked up as incidents of insanity. It doesn't matter that Harold Camping had worked vigorously to convince these people that the end was nigh, forcing them to such harsh conclusions. It doesn't matter that Camping put forth little or no effort to stave off any suicide or murder attempts related to his predictions. Nor does it seemingly matter that had it not been for Camping's false, profit-driven predictions, the world's population might be a bit bigger today than it was a week ago. Harold Camping is a criminal... and he's literally getting away with murder.
I recently offered to make a wager on the rapture not happening. I followed that up with another offer for a wager, based on the nonsensical and much-hyped 2012 apocalypse. I'm hereby renewing both wagers, but now, I'm announcing that 50% or more of the money I get through either wager will go directly to suicide prevention charities. I might also use those funds to form class action lawsuits against the perpetrators of these phony apocalypse predictions. I wrote those articles playfully, because I was confident that no one was faithful enough in these fake predictions to put their money where there mouths were and gamble on the accuracy of these fake predictions. But with the false prophet Harold Camping making a new prediction, in defiance of the death surrounding his previous fake prediction, I'm approaching this with a new vigor.
Shortly after publishing this article, I will attempt to contact Harold Camping directly through his radio network, Family Radio. I will lay down the gauntlet and present this wager directly to him. I will follow this up with an open letter, published here on Newsvine, and I will also publish whatever response I get out of them. And if they refuse to respond, I'll make sure the world knows that, and I will continue contacting them until I get a response. This rapture prediction nonsense needs to end before more innocent people are hurt. Updates will be published as they unfold.
